First, the featured photo is from the late 1970s, at a meeting before I came on staff at The Way International in New Knoxville, Ohio, as a member of the Biblical Research Team. It's of a small group of us doing "biblical research" at Way headquarters in the old Biblical Research Center with Victor Paul Wierwille, founder of The Way (1916-1985). 

Wierwille sits on the left at the head of the table. Rev. Walter J. Cummins, his research assistant and later my boss (who you meet in my memoir, Undertow), is right of VPW. He's wearing a white shirt. Walter got into The Way when he was a teenager and Wierwille groomed him to do his style of what they called "biblical research."

Next to Walter, wearing a dark top, is Mrs. Donna Randall, VPW's research secretary (1931-2023). She lived at Way headquarters in a trailer with her husband and daughters.

I don't know who that guy is sitting back there in the corner wearing a tie. 

I'm next around the table on the right wearing a white blouse, with my head resting on my arm, looking a bit tired or bored...

UPDATE on 2/25/2026: I just received two copies of the re-published version of  The Way: Living in Love  by Elena Whiteside that I ordered from The Way last week. I wanted to see whether they changed any of the text in the original text of the book that shows VPW in a bad light. THEY DID. In the quotes from the original version of the book (I own) that I give below, I will now bold the wording that's been deleted in the re-published version that I just bought from The Way. Greetings, readers. News of lawsuits against The Way are often lost or ignored, especially by followers of The Way who deny their importance. This post offers well-researched material about one such lawsuit. Although it happened 26 years ago, it affected many people's beliefs, reputations, and families. That matters. Letters that Victor Paul Wierwille wrote to The Way Corps 1977- 1981

Greetings, readers. If you are interested in getting FREE PDF files of letters Victor Paul Wierwille wrote to his Way Corps in-resident members and graduates from 1977 to 1981, you are in for an eye-opening experience. These letters reveal his bizzare thinking, at times, and the manipulative tactics he used to get sympathy and loyalty from Way Corps members, the devotees he trained to be leaders in The Way International organization (which is still in business today). I was in The Way Corps from 1971 - 1973.  These letters are from my personal files. I kept them all these years... The letters also serve as an historical record of events during those years, in particular: lawsuits by The Way against deprogrammers, problems with Way Corps who questioned Wierwille's biblical research and who Wierwille condemned, and the list goes on.
